We love hearing about how customers have found out about us and why they started using our website. Usually those reasons revolve around our low prices, us having an item that couldn’t be found elsewhere, or we were just the first place that someone clicked when they searched in Google. But a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking to Olivier Dessyn of the Mille-Feuille Bakery Cafe in New York City, and I got to hear a completely novel reason for someone to start using our site: He was planning his New York bakery…while in Paris!
As it turns out, it is difficult to work with local suppliers when you are across the Atlantic Ocean. Aside from saying our prices are "extremely good," Olivier said we had lots of smallwares and we ship quickly, so our site worked best for him. Since he has been such a good and regular customer, we are sure glad it did!
The Mille-Feuille Bakery Cafe has been up and running for a bit over a year in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City, not far from Washington Square Park. Olivier’s bakery is known for its fresh croissants, amazing macarons, and of course, mille-feuille. They also have a lunch menu including sandwiches like the croque- monsieur.
When asked about trends in Manhattan, Olivier said there are more French bakeries opening up. That means competition, but Olivier knows how to stick out among the competition. He said, "New Yorkers know what they want," and you have to treat serving them like "it's the first date”. That’s great advice for anyone in the food service business. Leave it to the French to give a romantic spin to sound business advice! He also mentioned that he is always trying new things, which sounds a lot like what we do here at the WEBstaurantStore.
Not only does Mille-Feuille Bakery Cafe sell baked goods, but if you would like to know how to bake them yourself, they also have classes where you can learn how to make macarons and croissants from French chefs. And if you won’t be in New York anytime soon but have a craving for macarons, you can order online and they’ll ship them to you.
